Learn the unique traditional art of mesmerizing Kerala murals from the acclaimed professional Kerala mural artist Nibin Raj.

Duration of the Course:

6 Months

Course Structure:

18 classes – 108 hours – 3 days a month

1st month – Pencil sketching of important elements using traditional measurements and drawing methods
2nd month – Line sketching using a brush, brush techniques
3rd month – Applying colours to the designs, ornaments, dresses, weapons etc.
4th month – Various wash and shading techniques
5th month – Begin final painting after selecting a traditional subject

6th month – Complete the painting with detailed finishing techniques

You will also learn:

  • Basic anatomy and colour codes for various figures from mythology
  • Basic anatomy and colour codes for various figures from mythology
  • The forms and shapes that are generally employed in mural drawing
  • Traditional measurements used and different drawing methods
  • Painting, washes and shading techniques with the different brushes provided
  • Dhanya shlokas and their significance and usage in murals

The course is structured in this manner to help students systematically understand the historical origins of mural art in Kerala, the mythology behind the art, the forms of the main figures drawn and the colours used etc.

The course provides varied assignments to help students practice and offers WhatsApp group support throughout the duration of the course.

Materials Provided:

  • Multiple sketches of elements and prominent figures
  • Canvas sheet for the first painting
  • Natural hair brushes, especially used for Kerala mural paintings
  • Indian ink - 1 botle

You will bring:

  • A3 size Drawing Book
  • HB Drawing Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Acrylic Colours (Will be informed in class)

About the Artist:

Nibin Raj is a Kerala Mural artist from Kozhikode, Kerala. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Institute of Mural Painting, Guruvayur. A skilled professional mural artist since 2005, his paintings are creative and original compositions that have gained acclaim among patrons not just within and outside Kerala but also abroad.
